January 21, 2023

ECHA is seeking public comments for the restriction of Creosote and Creosote related substances  from Dec 21, 2022 to Jan 25, 2023.

Proposal for restriction of Creosote and Creosote related substances was submitted by France which aims at reducing health (especially for the general public) and environmental risks associated with the reuse and secondary uses of wood treated with creosote (CAS 8001-58-9, EC 232-287-5) and creosote-related substances by amending entry 31 of the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) regulation Annex XVII.

According to the Biocidal Product Committee, creosote meets the requirements for being PBT and vPvB (Persistent, Bioaccumulating and Toxic and very Persistent and very Bioaccumulating). It is categorised as a carcinogen category 1B under EC Regulation 1272/2008 on classification, labelling, and packaging. Creosote satisfied several BPR exclusion criteria, according to the BPC's findings.
