Photoelectrocatalytic biosynthesis fuelled by microplastics

September 12, 2022

The scientists have developed a pathway for photoelectrochemical biosynthetic reactions that uses non-recyclable real-world poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) microplastics as an electron feedstock. Researchers claim that the approach is an example of sustainable way of solar-to-chemical material synthesis and simultaneously boosts rates of reaction (unlike traditional method which takes longer time due to involvement of water oxidation kinetics).
