Questions and Answers: Revision of the Regulation on classification, labelling and packaging of chemicals

December 19, 2022

The Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation ((EC) No 1272/2008) has detailed rules about how to label dangerous chemicals, including pictograms, signal words, and standard statements for hazard, prevention, response, storage, and disposal. CLP also sets general packaging rules to make sure that dangerous substances and mixtures are delivered safely. In addition to making sure that dangers are communicated through labelling requirements, CLP lays out what else can be done to deal with and reduce the risks of these substances under REACH, biocidal products, and other sector-specific regulations. The proposal makes the classification by manufacturers, downstream users, and importers, as well as the ECHA's Classification and Labelling Inventory, more effective and fit for purpose. The inventory is a very important tool for communication because it has the classifications of substances that manufacturers and importers have sent to the Agency (either directly or as part of their REACH registration dossiers). These changes should make it easier and faster for SMEs to classify substances. Companies should change their classification within 6 months of getting new information. The FAQs covered on this page clarify doubts about the EU's recent revisions to CLP regulations.
