ECHA Updates Substance Evaluation CoRAP List with the Chemical Benzotriazole

January 22, 2024

The substance evaluation conclusion document for Benzotriazole, EC No 202-394-1, was prepared by Germany under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) evaluated BTA, a benzodiazepines (BTA) with potential reprotoxicity, based on its environmental toxicity properties and reprotoxicity potential. BTA is used in various products, including lubricants, washing and cleaning products, disinfection products, metal surface treatment, industrial water treatment, and de-icing of roads and parking areas. BTA has been studied for its degradation in various tests, with some showing 0% degradation after 28 days of incubation. Further studies are needed to determine its long-term environmental fate properties and potential toxicity. The degradation half-life of BTA in surface water exceeds the 60-day threshold for very persistent substances.
