Notice of intent to amend the Domestic Substances List under subsection 87(3) of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 to indicate that subsection 81(3) of that Act applies to three substances

June 10, 2023

The Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, is set to be amended to apply subsection 81(3) to three substances, as the Minister of the Environment and the Minister of Health conducted a screening assessment.

The three substances are namely:

  • Naphthalenesulfonic acid, dinonyl- (also known as DNNSA);
  • Naphthalenesulfonic acid, dinonyl-, barium salt (also known as BaDNNSA);
  • Naphthalenesulfonic acid, dinonyl-, calcium salt (also known as CaDNNSA).

The notice suggests that significant new activities related to these substances may contribute to determining their toxicity or potential toxicity. The Minister of the Environment intends to amend the Domestic Substances List to reflect this change.

Public comments can be submitted within 60 days of publication, citing the Canada Gazette and the date of publication. The final screening assessment for these substances can be obtained from the Canada.ca website.
