Screening assessment from Canada on the Naphthalene Sulfonic Acids and Salts (NSAs) group

June 9, 2023

The Minister of the Environment and the Minister of Health have each carried out a screening assessment on six substances that are collectively referred to as the Naphthalene Sulfonic Acids and Salts Group within the Chemicals Management Plan.

These assessments were carried out in accordance with sections 68 or 74 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, which came into effect in 1999. According to the findings of the study, the compounds do not present a threat to either the short-term or long-term health of humans or the environment. However, in order to address the possible dangers that are connected with major new activities, regulatory measures will be introduced for three of the chemicals.

This screening assessment addresses the six substances listed below.

  • Naphthalenesulfonic acid, sodium salt
  • Naphthalenesulfonic acid, dinonyl
  • Naphthalenesulfonic acid, dinonyl-, and barium salt
  • Naphthalenesulfonic acid, dinonyl, calcium salt
  • Naphthalenedisulfonic acid, dinonyl
  • Naphthalenesulfonic acid, bis(1-methylethyl)-, compd. with cyclohexanamine (1:1)
