The Ministry of Health delivered a document to New Zealand First's Associate Health Minister, Casey Costello, outlining a proposal to halt annual tobacco tax hikes for three years. These taxes increase annually in tandem with inflation.
According to the Excise Act, this regulation is responsible for establishing the excise duties that are applicable to a variety of tobacco products.
The law, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2020, banned the sale of flavored tobacco products, including flavored vape tanks and menthol cigarettes. In 2022, voters overwhelmingly approved the ban by a two-to-one margin.
