A new regulatory paradigm for increased robustness in chemical testing

March 16, 2023

"New approach methodologies" (NAMs), non-animal techniques that are improving in accuracy, reliability, speed, and cost-effectiveness for determining the toxicity of chemicals, are now the focus of enthusiasm from governments and business across the globe.

NAMs approach toxic mechanisms from a data-driven and mechanistic perspective, allowing for more human-relevant and species-specific assessments. Examples include in silico approaches, in vitro methods, chemico methods, and omics methods.

NAMs can help improve chemical safety assessment by grouping substances and filling data gaps, providing higher confidence in risk assessments.
