ANVISA will open Public Consultation on Ban of E-Cigarettes in Brazil on 12th Dec, 2023

December 6, 2023

Brazil's Anvisa agency has announced a public consultation on whether e-cigarettes should be banned domestically. The consultation will begin on December 12, 2023 and continue until February 09, 2024. The general public will have the opportunity to submit their opinions and suggestions through an online form. The Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency will release a report detailing the findings of the consultation. Since 2009, Brazil has banned the production, sale, import, and promotion of e-cigarette products. The Brazilian Medical Association (AMB) and the Brazilian Association of Lung Diseases and Tuberculosis (SBPT) advocate for maintaining the ban on e-cigarettes, arguing that despite not containing most of the toxic substances found in traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes still contain nicotine and could potentially create a new generation of chemical addicts. However, the opposing department argues that the ban has no substantial effect and calls for established basic regulations to regulate the e-cigarette market.
