New Zealand seeks comments on proposal to regulate persistent organic pollutants

March 5, 2023

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are extremely toxic chemicals that are persistent in the environment and accumulate in people and animals.

How POPs are handled and disposed of in Aotearoa New Zealand will be governed by the new notification. The current Hazardous Substances (Storage and Disposal of Persistent Organic Pollutants) Notification 2004 will be replaced by this one.

People who own POPs (including items that contain POPs), those who handle and manage waste, and those engaged in POP disposal will be impacted by the new notice. EPA is notifying the public about this plan so they can comment, and EPA can then use this information when we finalise the notice.

The adjustments being advocated include:

1) Establishing procedures for the handling, storing, and disposal of made goods containing POPs
2) Integrating global best guidelines
3) Modifying sources to reflect legislative changes
