New Zealand seeks comments on proposal to restrict perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS)

March 5, 2023

The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants recently introduced a new substance. The substance is Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), as well as its salts and compounds that are linked to it.

This implies that the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 must be amended to include PFHxS as a restricted substance in Aotearoa New Zealand (HSNO Act).

The New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority is looking for input on the proposal to do this as well as any data regarding the chemical's use in New Zealand.

The EPA will report on the above consultation to the Minister of the Environment and publishes the report on the EPA website.
