Approving Alkyl (C12-16) Dimethylbenzyl Ammonium Chloride as an Existing Active Substance for Use in Biocidal Products in Accordance with Regulation (EU) No 528/2012

On January 16, 2024, The Official Journal of the European Union published  regulation which states approval of Alkyl (C) 12-16 dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride (ADBAC/BKC (C-12-C-16)) as an existing active substance for use in biocidal products of product-type 2, in accordance with Regulation (EU) No 528/2012 by European Commission.

The substance has been assessed for use in biocidal products, including product-type 2, private and public health area disinfectants, as per Annex V to Directive 98/8/EC Italy was designated as the rapporteur Member State, and its evaluating competent authority submitted the assessment report and its conclusions to the Commission on 10 September 2012. The Biocidal Products Committee adopted the Agency's opinion on 2 December 2021, concluding that Alkyl (C) 12-16 dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride may be approved as an active substance. Three members of the Biocidal Products Committee expressed concern about a potential risk to the soil compartment in minority opinions.

This regulation came into force from 5 February 2024.
