Sheffield Liberal Democrats are advocating for a ban on disposable e-cigarettes in the UK due to environmental and health concerns. They have submitted a motion to Mayor Tom Hunt to write a letter to the Department of Health requesting the prohibition of e-cigarette sales. The party claims disposable e-cigarettes pose a risk to waste and garbage collection, and may cause fires. Approximately 1.3 million e-cigarettes are discarded weekly. In 2022, 8.6% of young people aged 11-18 in the UK used e-cigarettes, with 40.1% having never smoked before. The party is not advocating for a ban on e-cigarettes themselves but for a nationwide effort to eliminate them.
