ECHA: Public comments sought on restriction proposal for Bisphenol A

December 21, 2022

ECHA is seeking public comments for the restriction of Bisphenol A from Dec 21, 2022 to Jan 25, 2023.

This proposal for the restriction of the Bisphenol A was submitted by Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Germany to reduce endocrine damaging bisphenols' exposure to the environment as much as is technically and financially possible.

The chemicals Bisphenol A and other bisphenols of similar environmental concern (collectively referred to as "BoSC") are the subject of this restriction proposal. BoSC also includes the following substances:

  • 4,4'-sulphonyldiphenol (‘Bisphenol S’, EC 201-250-5)
  • 4,4'-methylenediphenol (‘Bisphenol F’, EC 210-658-2)
  • 4,4'-(1-methylpropylidene)bisphenol (‘Bisphenol B’, EC 201-025-1)
  • 4,4'-[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl)ethylidene]diphenol (‘Bisphenol AF’, EC 216-
  • 036-7) and its salts

Restricting the bisphenol A authorization for sale of mixes and products with a concentration of 10 ppm or more (0.001% by weight).
This condition does not apply to mixtures and articles when it is covalently bound to any type of matrix or as intermediate in the manufacture of polymers and
- During their reasonable and expected use for the duration of their service life, contact with aqueous media in any form can be avoided, or

- Over the course of the service life, the maximum migration allowed in the corresponding mixtures and products is 0.04 mg/L.
