Jordan raises tax on heated tobacco products

December 27, 2023

During the most recent legislative session, MP Talal Ensour, chair of the parliamentary energy and mineral resources committee, requested the government to look into alternatives to the lump sum gasoline tax. He suggested lowering the amount of the gasoline tax and increasing taxes on tobacco, smoke, and spirits as alternatives. Ensour also advocated for taxes on huge, very profitable institutions. He stressed the possibility of lower fuel prices, particularly for diesel and kerosene.  It's worth noting that Jordan imposes a 200% excise tax on heated tobacco and e-cigarettes. Ensour criticized the government's absence throughout recent Jordanian crises, emphasizing the critical role of the House of Representatives in resolving them.
