Request for a scientific opinion on water-soluble Zinc salts used in oral products (Submission II)

February 3, 2023

The SCCS ruled in June 2018 that the use of zinc in toothpaste and mouthwash is safe.

SCCS stressed that dietary consumption was not considered and that the committee "cannot advise which fraction of the upper limit should be assigned to exposure from cosmetic items."

SCCS noted that, when evaluating chemical exposure, allocation criteria that indicate a fair level of exposure may be utilised while maintaining protection.

The second submission looks at reported food exposures, absorption kinetics, and how people of different ages use dental care products.

The deadline is extended to nine months.
