ECHA noticed Hazardous Chemicals in Consumer Products

January 13, 2024

A EU-wide enforcement project by the ECHA Forum has found that over 2400 products, mostly intended for consumers, were found to contain hazardous chemicals such as lead and phthalates. Over 18% of the inspected products breached EU laws. The most common types of products found to be electrical devices, sports equipment, toys, and fashion products. Electrical toys, such as toys, chargers, cables, and headphones, were found to be non-compliant due to lead, phthalates, or cadmium in solders, phthalates in soft plastic parts, or cadmium in circuit boards. Sports equipment, including yoga mats, bicycle gloves, balls, and rubber handles, was found to be non-compliant due to SCCPs, phthalates, and PAH in soft plastic. Toys, including bathing/aquatic toys, dolls, costumes, and other restricted substances, were also non-compliant. Fashion products, including bags, jewelry, belts, shoes, and clothes, were found to be non-compliant due to phthalates, lead, and cadmium. The non-compliance rate was higher in products originating outside the European Economic Area or whose origin was unknown.
